Lesson Objective:


By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to identify and describe common professions and workplaces in Russian, ask and answer questions about jobs, and use basic vocabulary related to employment.



Vocabulary List:



  • работа (rabota) – job, work

  • профессия (professiya) – profession

  • врач (vrach) – doctor

  • учитель (uchitel’) – teacher (male)

  • учительница (uchitelnitsa) – teacher (female)

  • инженер (inzhener) – engineer

Grammar Point:


Using the verb “работать” (to work) with professions and workplaces:


In Russian, the verb “работать” is used to express where or in what field a person works. It is typically followed by “в” (in) + the prepositional case when talking about a place.



Examples:



  • Я работаю в школе. – I work at a school.

  • Он работает в больнице. – He works in a hospital.

  • Она работает на фабрике. – She works at a factory.



To express someone’s profession, simply state the noun after the subject:



  • Я инженер. – I am an engineer.

  • Она учительница. – She is a teacher.

Read the following text:


Меня зовут Анна. Я врач. Я работаю в большой больнице в Москве. Мой брат – инженер. Он работает в офисе. Наша мама – учительница. Она работает в школе.



Answer the questions:

  • Кем работает их мама?

Listen to a short dialogue between two people discussing where they work and their professions. (Teacher provides or plays an audio file.)

  • Where do the speakers work?



Speaking Practice:


Practice this dialogue with a classmate or teacher:


A: Где ты работаешь?

B: Я работаю в офисе. А ты?

A: Я работаю в школе. Я учитель.



Now take turns asking and answering using different professions and workplaces.



Summary:


In this lesson, we learned Russian vocabulary for common jobs and workplaces, practiced how to say where someone works using the verb “работать”, and how to state someone’s profession. We practiced our reading, listening, and speaking skills with sample dialogues and texts.
