At Home and Furniture (Zu Hause und Möbel / Дома и мебель)



Lesson Objective:

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to identify and describe various rooms and pieces of furniture in Russian and use basic sentence structures to talk about their home.

Grammar Point:


Using "в" + Prepositional Case to Indicate Location


In Russian, to say something is "in" a place, use the preposition "в" followed by a noun in the prepositional case.


Examples:



  • Книга в спальне. – The book is in the bedroom.

  • Кошка в гостиной. – The cat is in the living room.

  • Стул в кухне. – The chair is in the kitchen.


Note: You must change the noun into the prepositional case form, usually ending in -е or -ии.

Read the following Russian paragraph about someone's apartment:


Это моя квартира. У меня есть гостиная, кухня, спальня и ванная. В гостиной стоит диван и лампа. В спальне есть кровать и шкаф. На кухне — стол и стулья.

  • Какая у тебя гостиная? (What is your living room like?)



Summary:


In this lesson, we learned vocabulary related to the home and furniture in Russian. We practiced how to describe locations using "в" with the prepositional case and read and listened to descriptions of homes. We also practiced asking questions about someone's home and answering them.



Homework:



  • Write 5 sentences describing your own home using at least three rooms and four pieces of furniture.

  • Label a floor plan of an apartment with room names in Russian.
