Lesson Objective:

Grammar Point:

Using the verb “trabalhar” (to work) and prepositions with workplace nouns.

In Portuguese, to express where someone works, the verb trabalhar is used with prepositions like em (in/at). The preposition may contract depending on the article of the noun:

• Eu trabalho no hospital. (I work at the hospital.)


• Ela trabalha na escola. (She works at the school.)


• Nós trabalhamos num escritório grande. (We work in a big office.)

Note how the preposition “em” contracts with the definite article “o” or “a” to become “no” (em + o) or “na” (em + a).

A: O que você faz?

B: Eu sou [insert profession].

A: Onde você trabalha?
