Grammar Point:
Using "ser" and "ter" to talk about identity and age
In Portuguese, the verb “ser” is used to talk about permanent characteristics such as nationality and profession. For example:
- Eu sou estudante. (I am a student.)
- Ele é médico. (He is a doctor.)
- Ela é brasileira. (She is Brazilian.)
The verb “ter” is used to express age:
- Eu tenho 25 anos. (I am 25 years old.)
- Quantos anos você tem? (How old are you?)
