Hobbies and Free Time in Portuguese



Lesson Objective:


By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to talk about hobbies and free time activities in Portuguese using common vocabulary and simple sentence structures.



Vocabulary List:



  • ler: to read

  • ouvir música: to listen to music

  • ver filmes: to watch movies

  • jogar futebol: to play soccer

  • cozinhar: to cook

  • nadar: to swim

  • caminhar: to walk

  • viajar: to travel

  • pintar: to paint

  • fotografar: to take photos

  • tocar violão: to play the guitar

  • dançar: to dance



Grammar Point:


Verb conjugation in the present tense (regular –AR, –ER, –IR verbs)


In Portuguese, verbs change depending on the subject pronoun. Here are examples with common hobbies:



  • Eu leio livros. (I read books.)

  • Tu cozinhas muito bem. (You cook very well.)

  • Ele/ela joga futebol todo fim de semana. (He/she plays soccer every weekend.)

  • Nós ouvimos música juntos. (We listen to music together.)

  • Vocês dançam bem! (You all dance well!)


Note: "jogar" (to play a sport/game) is a regular –AR verb. "Ouvir" (to hear) is an irregular –IR verb and changes slightly.

Listening Comprehension:


Listen to a native speaker talking about their hobbies. (Instructor provides audio with a person describing what they do in their free time.)


Task: Write down three activities the speaker mentions. Try to write one complete sentence in Portuguese for each activity.



Speaking Practice:


Practice answering the following question with a classmate or recording yourself:


"O que você gosta de fazer no seu tempo livre?"(What do you like to do in your free time?)


Use at least three different hobbies from today’s vocabulary.
