Colors and Shapes in Portuguese

Lesson Objective:

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to recognize, name, and use basic colors and shapes in Portuguese. They will also be able to describe objects using color and shape adjectives.

Vocabulary List:

  • vermelho: red

  • azul: blue

  • amarelo: yellow

  • verde: green

  • preto: black

  • branco: white

  • cinza: gray

  • laranja: orange

  • marrom: brown

  • rosa: pink

  • círculo: circle

  • quadrado: square

  • retângulo: rectangle

  • triângulo: triangle

  • oval: oval

  • estrela: star

  • coração: heart

Grammar Point:

Agreement of adjectives with nouns in gender and number:

In Portuguese, adjectives usually come after the noun they describe and must agree in gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural).

Examples:

  • Um carro vermelho(A red car) — "carro" is masculine singular.

  • Uma flor vermelha(A red flower) — "flor" is feminine singular.

  • Carros vermelhos(Red cars) — masculine plural.

  • Flores vermelhas(Red flowers) — feminine plural.

Shape words are usually nouns and do not change, but when used as adjectives (as in “forma circular”), they may require agreement as part of the descriptive phrase.

Exercises:

Reading Comprehension:

Texto:

A casa de João é azul e branca. No jardim, há muitas flores vermelhas e amarelas. Ele tem uma bola verde em forma de círculo e um tapete quadrado marrom na sala.

Questions:

  • What colors are João’s house?

  • What color are the flowers in the garden?

  • What is the shape and color of João’s ball?

  • What shape and color is the rug?

Listening Comprehension:

Listen to a recording where a person describes different objects in their room using colors and shapes (e.g., “Eu tenho um quadro retangular azul e uma almofada rosa em forma de coração”).

(Instructor should provide or play a relevant audio file)

Task: Match each object with its described color and shape based on the audio.

Speaking Practice:

Practice describing objects in your room. Use the structure:

  • "Eu tenho um/uma [object] [shape if applicable] [color]."

Examples:

  • “Eu tenho uma caneca azul em forma de estrela.” (I have a blue star-shaped mug.)

  • “Eu tenho um caderno quadrado preto.” (I have a black square notebook.)

Dialogue Practice: Work with a partner and describe random objects to each other using shapes and colors. The other person guesses which object is being described.

Summary:

In this lesson, we learned the names of basic colors and shapes in Portuguese and how to describe objects using adjectives. We also practiced proper adjective agreement with nouns and used vocabulary in context through reading, listening, and speaking exercises.
