Basic Verbs in Everyday Life



Lesson Objective:


By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to understand, recognize, and use basic Portuguese verbs commonly used in daily situations.

  • Ser: to be (essential/permanent characteristics)

  • Estar: to be (temporary conditions/locations)

  • Ir: to go

  • Fazer: to do or to make

  • Comer: to eat

  • Beber: to drink

  • Falar: to speak or to talk

Grammar Point:


In Portuguese, verbs are conjugated based on the subject pronoun and the tense. Present tense conjugation is commonly used in daily conversations. Below are examples for regular and irregular verbs in the present tense:



Example (Regular Verb - Estudar):



  • Eu estudo (I study)

  • Você estuda (You study)

  • Ele/Ela estuda (He/She studies)

  • Nós estudamos (We study)

  • Vocês estudam (You [plural] study)

  • Eles/Elas estudam (They study)



Example (Irregular Verb - Ser):



  • Eu sou (I am)

  • Você é (You are)

  • Ele/Ela é (He/She is)

  • Nós somos (We are)

  • Vocês são (You [plural] are)

  • Eles/Elas são (They are)

Reading Comprehension:



João é estudante. Ele acorda cedo e estuda em casa. À tarde, ele vai à escola. Depois da aula, João volta para casa, fala com os amigos e faz os deveres. À noite, ele come com a família e assiste TV.


Questions:



  • What does João do in the morning?

  • Where does João go in the afternoon?

  • What does João do with his family at night?



Listening Comprehension:



Listen to a short conversation between two people discussing their daily routine. Identify the verbs used and write them down. (Teacher provides an audio clip or reads it aloud.)



Speaking Practice:



Pair up with a classmate and take turns asking each other about daily routines using the question: “O que você faz todos os dias?” (What do you do every day?). Try to use at least three different verbs from the vocabulary list.
