The GROW ESL program originated in June 2005 when a Christian from Albania, in collaboration with New Life Northeast Church and New Life Dresher Church, organized a Vacation Bible School (VBS) in Mayfair, Philadelphia. Initially, the VBS had a modest turnout, prompting the organizers to distribute more fliers in the neighborhood. During this effort, they encountered a large group of Albanian children in the playground at St John’s Lutheran Church. Upon further discussion, they learned that the director, an Albanian Christian, was running a summer camp for local Albanian children. Building on this connection, the director requested English classes for the new Albanian immigrant adults in the community, leading to the inception of the GROW ESL program. The program incorporates Scripture and prayer, aiming to teach English while sharing the Christian message with students.
