In 2000, Wharton became the first school-wide Dual Language Magnet Program in the Houston Independent School District (HISD). The program integrates English and Spanish-speaking students in the classroom, aiming to make students bilingual, bi-literate, and bicultural. The Pre-K program provides half-day instruction in Spanish and half in English, while the kindergarten through 5th grade program follows an 80:20 immersion model, gradually increasing English instruction. The Middle School Dual Language Magnet Program (6th-8th) offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and continues to develop advanced academic Spanish skills. By the end of 8th grade, students fulfill the foreign language requirement for the HISD Recommended High School Diploma and can earn high school and college credits through the AP Spanish exam.
Wharton Dual Language Academy receives mixed reviews. While praised for its nice facilities, bilingual education, and diverse student body, concerns are raised about bullying, enrollment difficulties, and issues with the administration. Positive aspects include dedicated teachers, the International Baccalaureate program, and a nurturing environment, but caution is advised for the middle school experience. Despite varying opinions, the school has left a positive impact on many, fostering fond memories and a sense of community.
