Grammar Point:

Question Structure: Asking for Price

To ask the price of an item in Bengali, the structure is:

এটার দাম কত? (ēṭār dām kôto?) – "How much is this?"

Responding to this, the structure would be:

এটার দাম [amount] টাকা। (ēṭār dām [amount] tākā.) – "This costs [amount] taka."

Examples:

  • How much is the apple? – আপেলের দাম কত? (āpēlēr dām kôto?)

  • It costs 50 taka. – এটা ৫০ টাকা। (ēṭā 50 tākā.)

Customer: একটু কম হবে? (ēkṭu kôm hōbē?) – Can it be a bit less?

Shopkeeper: ঠিক আছে, ৯০ টাকা দিন। (ṭhik āchē, 90 tākā din.) – Okay, give 90 taka.

Questions:

  • What is the price of the item?

  • Did the customer ask for a discount?

  • What was the final price agreed upon?

Homework:

  • Make a vocabulary list with 5 new items from your local grocery store in Bengali with their prices.

  • Write your own short dialogue in English and Bengali, where you buy two items.

  • Practice saying prices in Bengali using different numerical amounts (e.g., 25, 75, 120).
