Lesson Objective:
By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to identify and name family members and relatives in Bengali, use related vocabulary in simple sentences, and understand basic familial relationships.
Vocabulary List:
- Family – পরিবার (poribaar)
- Father – বাবা (baba)
- Mother – মা (ma)
- Brother – ভাই (bhai)
- Sister – বোন (bon)
- Grandfather – দাদা / নানা (dada / nana)
- Grandmother – দাদি / নানি (dadi / nani)
- Uncle (Father’s brother) – কাকা / দাদা (kaka / dada)
- Aunt (Father's or Mother’s sister) – পিসি / খালা (pisi / khala)
- Cousin – কাজিন / চাচাতো ভাই বা বোন (kajin / chacato bhai ba bon)
- Relative – আত্মীয় (atrio)
Grammar Point:
In Bengali, possessive structures are often formed by placing a possessive pronoun before the noun. The pronouns are:
- My – আমার (amar)
- Your – তোমার (tomar)
- His/Her – ওর or তার (or / tar)
Example sentences:
- My mother is kind – আমার মা দয়ালু (amar ma doyaloo)
- His brother is a student – ওর ভাই একজন ছাত্র (or bhai ekjon chhatro)

Pair up and practice this short dialogue:
- A: Who is in your family?
- B: In my family, there is my father, mother, and one brother.
- A: What does your mother do?
- B: She is a doctor.
