Everyday Objects in Bengali



Lesson Objective:


By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to identify, pronounce, and use basic Bengali vocabulary related to everyday objects. Learners will also understand how to use the demonstrative pronouns "this" and "that" in Bengali.

  • চেয়ার (cheyār): Chair

  • টেবিল (ṭebil): Table

  • বই (boi): Book

  • কলম (kolom): Pen

  • ঘড়ি (ghôṛi): Clock / Watch

  • মোবাইল (mobail): Mobile phone

Grammar Point:


Demonstrative Pronouns in Bengali


Bengali uses specific words to refer to "this" and "that":



  • এই (ei): this

  • সেই (sei): that


To say "This is a chair" in Bengali: এটা একটা চেয়ার (eṭa ekṭa cheyār)


To say "That is a pen" in Bengali: ওটা একটা কলম (ōṭa ekṭa kolom). (Note: ওটা (ōṭa) is used for "that" when pointing)


Structure: [This/That] + [is] + [a/an] + [object]

Read the passage below and answer the questions.



টেবিলের উপর একটা বই আছে। পাশে একটা কলম আছে। ঘড়িটা দেয়ালের সঙ্গে ঝুলছে। আমি একটা চেয়ারে বসে আছি। আমার মোবাইল ব্যাগের মধ্যে আছে।


Translation: On the table, there is a book. Next to it, there is a pen. The clock is hanging on the wall. I am sitting on a chair. My mobile is inside the bag.



Questions:



  • Where is the book?

"এইটা একটা কম্পিউটার। এটা খুব দরকারি। ওইটা একটা ব্যাগ। ব্যাগের মধ্যে বই আছে।"


Task: Write down the objects mentioned and what is said about them.



Speaking Practice:


Practice saying the following sentences aloud:



  • This is a pen. - এটা একটা কলম। (eṭa ekṭa kolom)

  • That is a watch. - ওটা একটা ঘড়ি। (ōṭa ekṭa ghôṛi)

  • This is my bag. - এটা আমার ব্যাগ। (eṭa āmār byāg)

  • That is your computer. - ওটা তোমার কম্পিউটার। (ōṭa tōmār kompiuṭar)
