Common Verbs and Activities in Bengali

Lesson Objective:

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to recognize and use common Bengali verbs and describe daily activities using simple sentence structures.

Vocabulary List:

  • খাওয়া (khaoa): to eat

  • যাওয়া (jaoa): to go

  • আসা (asha): to come

  • ঘুমানো (ghumano): to sleep

  • পড়ানো (porano): to teach

  • পড়া (pora): to read/study

  • কাজ করা (kaj kora): to work

  • খেলা (khela): to play

  • লিখা (likha): to write

  • দেখা (dekha): to see/watch

Grammar Point:

In Bengali, verbs conjugate based on the subject and tense. The infinitive form of a verb typically ends with “-আ” (e.g., খাওয়া - to eat). Present tense for "I" (আমি - ami) is formed by removing the final "আ" and adding "ি" (e.g., আমি খাই - I eat).

Examples:

  • আমি পড়ি (ami pori) – I read/study

  • তুমি ঘুমাও (tumi ghumao) – You sleep

  • সে আসে (she ashe) – He/She comes

Exercises:

Reading Comprehension:

Read the following text and answer the questions.

রাহুল সকালে ঘুম থেকে উঠে। সে দাঁত ব্রাশ করে এবং পরে নাশতা খায়। সে স্কুলে যায় এবং পড়াশোনা করে। বিকেলে সে বন্ধুর সাথে খেলে এবং সন্ধ্যায় ঘরে ফিরে আসে। রাতের খাবার খেয়ে সে ঘুমায়।

  • What does Rahul do in the morning?

  • Who does he play with?

  • What does he do at night?

Listening Comprehension:

Listen to a short audio (provided by instructor) where two people talk about their daily routines. Identify at least five verbs used in their conversation and write them down in their infinitive and conjugated forms.
